This paper describes High Speed Machining (HSM) with all the components that make up this machine process whole, starting from the idea, development through history, all the way to modern days. Properties and parameters of HSM has been defined with a given clear distinctions in compared to conventional machine processing. The paper clearly presents many advantages, but also disadvantages of applying this manufacturing strategy. The tool plays an important role in the successful machining process. Their application should be based on knowledge in material properties of the part being machined. The also paper presents a systematic overview of tools used in high speed machining with their features, advantages, disadvantages, and given analysis and conditions of wear in given working conditions. HSM would not have been possible without the use of appropriate machine tools whose properties are described in the work with the strict set of requirements for practical use in production. The link between tool and machine represents adequate and standard clamping tools that must also meet strict operating requirements for use in HSM. The second half of the paper deals with the machining of difficult to cut materials. An overview of difficult to cut materials has been made with all their various features. Problems in terms of machinability are presented in detail, as well as possible solutions related to the machining application based on advanced strategies, machines and tools for their successful machining. For each represented group of difficult to cut materials, practical machining examples from workshop floor with processing parameters are given. Also, comparison between HSM and conventional machining is given with real practical data from which the relevant conclusions can be made.
