The main aim of this paper was to identify the advantages and disadvantages of CAD and BIM technology from a technical aspect in the engineering environment. In addition to the advantages and disadvantages, it was important to point to the comparison of the specific features of each technology in order to gain the sense of what they mean in the design and design process. The results of the analysis of these two technologies in the theoretical sense show that when we talk about BIM technology, then we are thinking of the entire process of design and data and information being collected in the overall design process, while CAD technology has its full application in the detailed design process where it definitely gives a lot of useful information and data but not in the overall design process. CAD technology does not cover the entire construction process. In the second part of the paper, these two technologies are put into mutual relationship and are compared to a practical example of the project of the block cogeneration plant project using the Autodesk Revit and AutoCAD Plant 3D applications. It has been shown that a specific project for the development of highly detailed and elaborate CAD pipelines is much more acceptable because such projects require specific project documentation that poses a lot of challenges ahead of the BIM technology. From the point of view of the time required for project design in one and the other application, it has been shown that considering the good and quality preparation of AutoCAD Plant 3D more flexible than Revit. The main item to support this fact is the production of equipment at the beginning of the project where directly through the interface of the AutoCAD Plant 3D application is directly developed the necessary equipment that can be easily adapted to the needs in various ways, while in Revit this step requires a very detailed adaptation or creation of new pieces equipment from the very beginning.
